Chapel Du Rosaire by Henri Matisse – recreation (Work in Progress)

Project Overview

The Chapel Du Rosaire de Vence was described by Henri Matisse as his masterpiece. A simple Chapel designed by the artist for the Dominican nuns in Nice after World War 2, the space is eclectic in its simplicity with natural daylight being the medium by which the beautiful colours of the stained glass works cause refractions of light to be reflected off the floors and walls creating a sacred space for meditation and contemplation.

Merge are proud to have been commissioned to create the 'daylight' required using modern LED technology, controlled with a Vantage DMX Controller, as well as an audio system using Amina Invisible Speakers. Our control interfaces for the project needed to be discrete, yet offer powerful control of the Lighting, Audio and HVAC Systems.

Using the Vantage Keypad Designer we came up with a bespoke keypad design that blends in with the Chapel and designed a Touch Panel interface that is easy to use and allows the client to select between the many scenarios available in our programming of the system.

Lighting approach

Lighting approach

How do we create sunlight? Since we are working in a Grade II listed barn made with 17th Century ship timbers and with a lack of windows, we needed to find light sources that have wide intensity parameters, can be motorised to mimic the sun's arc based on the time of day and provide not only the cool and warm whites, but the entire colour spectrum that makes up natural sunlight. Using Philips Selecon, Colour Blast and Varilite VLX3 moving heads, our initial survey tests showed excellent results, both in colour variation and angle and direction of light. This will be very important when the light is directed through the stained glass windows and showers the Chapel with glorious sunlight and colour artefacts from the stained glass.

Using DMX controls combined with our Vantage Home Automation System, we will create a subtle changing environment based on time of day, affecting the direction and intensity of light. Starting at dawn we will achieve a blueish tinge to white light as it would be experienced in the Mediterranean slowly yellowing towards midday, then holding steady as the sun completes it's high arc through to around 3pm, then steadily darkening with oranges and reds until it subsides in the western horizon and into evening. Our inspiration for this project is mediterranean summertime, so even on those dark and rainy winter afternoons, the Chapel will provide an uplifting, inspirational experience.

The secondary lighting scheme is traditional using down lights, wall lights and chandeliers.

Audio system approach

Audio system approach

It goes without saying that the Chapel should have a completely invisible sound system with quality sound throughout for background music and voice reinforcement. The natural choice for us was to choose the top of the range Amina Invisble Loudspeakers (AIW5X) shown here before skimming over with plaster. While the ceilings are high and the room very reflective, the sound from the Amina's are natural and dynamic.

Since we all use iPods we have installed a Sonance iPort in wall docking station as the primary audio source, with a back up CD player if required. The iPort is supported with Vantage two way drivers meaning that the client can view and navigate his iPod / iPhone from the Vantage In Wall Touch Panel and together with lighting and comfort controls, set the scene for a truly inspirational experience.
